Orange Poppy Seed Biscotti

This recipe is adapted from an article by Marie Piraino in Eating Well magazine. I substituted canned poppy seed filling (you will find it in any supermarket in the baking section) because I couldn’t find a jar of poppy seeds that had not turned rancid. After returning my fourth jar, I decided it was time to improvise. Poppy seeds have a very short shelf life and if you can find a good source for them, keep the unused portion in the freezer.

2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

¾ cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

2 large eggs

2 large egg whites

¼ cup poppy seed filling

2 tablespoons Grand Marnier or other orange-flavored liqueur

1 teaspoon Boyajian orange oil*

3 tablespoons grated orange zest

1 cup golden raisins, coarsely chopped

1 egg white, lightly beaten
